When I first became a GP, I worked in an area with high rates of obesity and diabetes. I noticed that the patients I served had greater needs, and often required ongoing care to keep their health on track.
It was evident to me, that for a portion of people who are overweight or obese, achieving or maintaining weight loss the ‘standard’ way does not work.
The simplified approach of “eat less, exercise more” is appropriate for some. However, it doesn’t address the complex needs of our obese community. What it can do, is leave you feeling let down by the standard medical care, demoralised and hopeless. That somehow your failure to lose weight means you haven’t tried hard enough, or been strong enough.
As a SCOPE-certified medical practitioner, I recognise that obesity is a chronic, relapsing disease, with a strong genetic predisposition.
Obesity requires a unique and specialised approach to patient care. Those treatments should be administered in a caring and supportive way. Without judgement, and with your long term health at the heart.
There is medical help and ongoing support available to you to allow you to take charge of your health and life. I look forward to working with you to find the right solutions which enable you to leave obesity behind.
